About Virechana

Virechana is the principal treatment for Pitta disorders and, done properly, one of the most effective interventions in Ayurveda for acidity, inflammatory skin disease and hormonal acne. It is also the one most often attempted carelessly. The purgation itself is a single day; the preparation is three to seven days of internal ghee, and the recovery is a further three to five days of graded diet. Skipping either bracket turns a therapeutic procedure into a laxative, with none of the benefit and all of the depletion. Autumn, when monsoon-accumulated Pitta surfaces, is the classical season for it.

What happens

The sequence, stage by stage

Knowing the shape of it in advance removes most of the apprehension patients arrive with.

1

Snehapana — internal oleation

Medicated ghee taken on an empty stomach in an increasing dose over three to seven days, until specific signs of saturation appear.

2

Svedana — sudation

Oil massage and steam for two to three days, moving the mobilised Pitta toward the gut.

3

The purgation day

A measured herbal purgative given in the morning. Bowel movements are counted and monitored through the day; you eat nothing until they settle.

4

Samsarjana Krama — graded diet

Thin gruel, then thicker gruel, then soup with rice, returning to normal food over three to five days as digestion recovers.

What it helps with

  • Settles acidity, reflux and burning sensations
  • Clears inflammatory skin conditions
  • Supports liver and metabolic function
  • Reduces heat-driven irritability

When it is not appropriate

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Active peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Severe debility or dehydration
  • Immediately after another purification procedure
  • Children and the very elderly

Afterwards

The recovery phase determines whether the therapy holds. It is not optional.

  • Strict adherence to the graded diet — this stage is not optional
  • No travel or work pressure for three days
  • Plenty of warm water; no cold drinks
  • Rasayana herbs once appetite returns
