Digestion & Acidity

Bloating, reflux, irregular bowels and food sensitivities usually trace back to a disturbed digestive fire rather than the last meal.

How this pattern is read

Ayurveda treats digestion as the hinge on which almost everything else turns. Agni — digestive fire — can be too weak to process food, too sharp and burning, or erratically variable, and each produces a recognisably different set of complaints. Weak agni leaves undigested residue called ama, which is heavy, sticky and travels; it is the mechanism Ayurveda blames for everything from joint pain to skin disease. Sharp agni burns through food too fast and produces the reflux and hunger-irritability pattern. Variable agni gives you the person who digests fine one week and not at all the next. Naming which of the three you have changes the treatment entirely — which is why generic 'gut health' advice helps some people and makes others worse.

Approach

How treatment is structured

1

Identify which agni pattern you have

Tongue coating, appetite timing, character of the stool and what happens after specific foods tell us whether we are dealing with weak, sharp or variable digestion.

2

Clear the residue before adding anything

If there is ama, nourishing herbs and probiotics feed it. A short period of light, warm, simple food with digestive spices usually comes first.

3

Rebuild agni

Specific formulations — Hingvashtaka, Avipattikar, Trikatu, Triphala among them — chosen for your pattern rather than for the diagnosis on your file.

4

Fix the timing, not just the food

When you eat matters nearly as much as what. Most reflux improves substantially once the largest meal moves to midday and the evening meal moves earlier.

What is realistic, and by when

Bloating and post-meal heaviness usually shift within two to three weeks. Reflux takes four to six. Long-standing IBS is a three-to-six-month project and tends to improve in steps rather than smoothly.
