About Panchakarma
Panchakarma is not a single treatment but a sequence: prepare the body, mobilise what has accumulated, remove it through a chosen route, then rebuild. The five principal procedures are Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana, and almost nobody needs all five. Which one is appropriate depends on your constitution, which dosha is disturbed, the season, and — most importantly — whether you currently have the strength to tolerate it. A well-planned Panchakarma leaves you lighter and clearer. A badly planned one leaves you depleted for months, which is why the assessment matters more than the therapy.
The sequence, stage by stage
Knowing the shape of it in advance removes most of the apprehension patients arrive with.
Assessment
Constitution, current imbalance, digestive strength and season are assessed together. If your strength is low, the answer is often to build first and purify later.
Purvakarma — preparation
Internal oleation with medicated ghee over three to seven days, followed by sudation. This loosens what has lodged in the tissues and moves it back toward the digestive tract.
Pradhanakarma — the main procedure
The chosen route of elimination is performed under supervision. This is a single decisive day for Virechana, or a structured series for Basti.
Paschatkarma — rebuilding
A graded diet beginning with thin rice gruel and returning to normal food over several days. This stage is where most self-administered Panchakarma goes wrong.
