About Udvartana

Where Abhyanga soothes, Udvartana stimulates. Coarse herbal powders — typically triphala, kolakulathadi or a horse-gram base — are worked firmly upward against the lie of the hair. The friction generates heat, opens the pores and mobilises subcutaneous fat and lymph. It is the standard therapy for Kapha-dominant patterns: heaviness that does not shift with diet, water retention, sluggish metabolism, and the particular body composition that accompanies PCOS and hypothyroidism. It is vigorous rather than relaxing, and patients usually feel noticeably lighter afterwards.

What happens

The sequence, stage by stage

Knowing the shape of it in advance removes most of the apprehension patients arrive with.

1

Powder selection

A dry powder for pure Kapha patterns, or a paste with a small quantity of oil where the skin is dry or sensitive.

2

Upward friction

Firm strokes worked against the direction of hair growth across the limbs, back and abdomen. The pressure is deliberate, not gentle.

3

Heat and rest

The generated warmth is allowed to settle; steam is sometimes added for stubborn stagnation.

4

Bathing

Warm water without soap, so the residual powder finishes its work on the skin.

What it helps with

  • Improves metabolic rate and lymphatic drainage
  • Reduces heaviness and water retention
  • Tones skin and reduces cellulite
  • Helpful alongside PCOS and thyroid management

When it is not appropriate

  • Very dry or sensitive skin without an oil base
  • Eczema, psoriasis or open lesions in the area
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe Vata depletion or emaciation
  • Acute back pain of undiagnosed cause

Afterwards

The recovery phase determines whether the therapy holds. It is not optional.

  • Warm shower; avoid soap immediately afterwards
  • Warm, light meals for the rest of the day
  • Movement rather than rest — a walk suits it better than a nap
  • Typically given as a course of 14 to 21 sessions
