About Nasya
Classical texts call the nose the doorway to the head, and Nasya uses it deliberately. Warm medicated oil instilled into each nostril reaches the sinuses and the tissue above the palate, clearing congestion that steam and antihistamines only postpone. There are several forms: a gentle daily maintenance dose of two drops per nostril, a stronger therapeutic course for sinusitis or migraine, and a purificatory version used inside Panchakarma. The daily maintenance version, Pratimarsha Nasya, is safe enough for long-term use and is one of the few therapies with a genuine preventive role against recurring allergy.
The sequence, stage by stage
Knowing the shape of it in advance removes most of the apprehension patients arrive with.
Local preparation
Face, forehead and neck are massaged and given gentle steam to open the passages.
Instillation
Warmed medicated oil is placed in each nostril while lying with the head tilted back. You breathe in gently as it is given.
Clearing
Spitting out what drains to the throat rather than swallowing it. Some coughing is expected and normal.
Rest
Gargling with warm salt water and a short period of quiet before going out.
