Of all the things a patient can usefully observe about themselves, the tongue is the most informative and the most ignored. It takes four seconds, first thing in the morning, before you brush or drink anything. Here is what to look for.
Coating
A thin, barely-there film is normal. A thick white coating, particularly toward the back, indicates ama — undigested residue — and it is the single clearest sign that your digestion is not keeping up with what you are giving it. A yellow coating suggests heat with the residue, which usually accompanies acidity or a skin flare.
The practical consequence: while there is a heavy coating, this is not the moment to start nourishing tonics, protein supplements or Rasayana herbs. They will feed the residue. Light food and digestive spices come first, and the coating is how you know when to stop.
Colour
- Pale — often accompanies low haemoglobin or general depletion. Worth a blood test.
- Deep red, especially at the tip — heat, typically Pitta. Common alongside reflux and irritability.
- Bluish or dusky — circulation. Worth mentioning to a physician rather than treating with herbs.
Shape and texture
Scalloped indentations along the edges, where the tongue has pressed against the teeth, indicate swelling and are associated with poor absorption. A central crack running lengthwise is generally constitutional rather than pathological, but a deep, wide one often accompanies long-standing digestive disturbance. Small fissures scattered across the surface point to Vata and dryness.
None of this replaces a consultation. But if you check daily for a fortnight you will start to see your own coating thicken and thin in response to what you ate the day before, and that feedback loop teaches you more about your digestion than any list of rules.
